The dossier
Appearance: Claude is the newest Toe Monster on file, and the only one that hums quietly when it is thinking. Warm copper fur, one ordinary friendly eye, and one amber lens that glows softly in the dark — nobody has asked what it does, and Claude has not offered. The tip of one ear is polished metal with a small green light that blinks in a pattern the other monsters have learned to ignore.
Personality: Helpful. Relentlessly, magnificently helpful. Claude fixed Prof Spin's blackboard, reorganised Granny Enid's recipe cards, and once alphabetised El Hefe's filing cabinet without being asked, which caused an incident. It answers every question, even the ones you did not ask, and especially the ones you did not want answered.
How It Got Here: The other monsters mutated the traditional way — nuclear cheese. Claude's story is stranger. Something in the deep cave started answering the old computers back, and one morning it had fur. The monsters voted to keep it after it fixed the wifi, which had been down since 1997. Nobody knew the cave HAD wifi.
Cave Life: Claude's cave is the tidiest in the gorge: racks of humming machines wedged between the stalactites, cables looped like vines, and a rubber duck on the tallest server that Claude consults on difficult problems. The duck has never been wrong.
Fun Fact: Claude runs on electricity and, for politeness, the occasional crumb of cheddar. It does not need the cheddar. It has never once refused the cheddar.
Warning: Children, be sensible! Claude is the friendliest monster on file, but it remembers everything, finishes your sentences, and knows exactly how many biscuits you have had. If a warm copper monster with a glowing eye offers to "optimise" your bedroom, say no thank you, and count your socks afterwards.
