The dossier

Appearance: Jenks is the slate-grey one with the big swept-back quiff between his ears. He combs it every morning. It is the same colour as the rest of him, with a few silver streaks that he says are from thinking. We think they are from the phone. He has a big cheeky grin, and there is always, always a red Wales rugby scarf round his neck. Nobody has seen him without it. Nobody has dared to ask.

Personality: Every so often a Toe Monster gets into a spot of bother. A child counts their toes and comes up one short. A shoe complains about being eaten. Somebody’s sock goes missing in suspicious circumstances. That is when Jenks steps in. He is the insurance and business monster, and his job is very simple: if you complain, you get paid out. Eventually. He works hand in paw with El Hefe. El Hefe makes sure nobody believes you saw a Toe Monster. Jenks makes sure that, if they do, there is a form for it.

Favourite Gadget: One mobile phone. That is it. Jenks runs the entire Toe Monster insurance empire from a phone held slightly too far from his face. Contracts, letters, cheques, apologies, the lot. He has never used a computer. He does own a laptop. It is still in its box in the corner of his cave. He has never logged in, because he cannot remember the password, and he is not going to ask.

Cave Life: Jenks’s cave is an office with rocks in it. There are towers of paper that lean but never fall, a “CLAIMS PAID (EVENTUALLY)” sign, a red dragon pennant, and a plate of Welsh teacakes that is never quite full. On rugby days the whole cave turns red and you can hear him from Cheddar Gorge to Bristol.

Fun Fact: Jenks supports Wales. Cheddar is in England. Nobody knows why. He says it is a long story and then changes the subject. Our best theory is Welsh teacakes, and honestly, who can blame him. They are delightful.

Warning: If you lose a toe near Cheddar, do not panic. Jenks will be along shortly with a form. Fill it in neatly. Do not ask about the laptop.

Habitat survey

Inside Jenks’s cave

Somewhere in Cheddar Gorge — the exact spot is a secret, and the cave has an inconvenient habit of not being where it was — this is home.
